KK Archdiocese celebrates 14th archdiocesan-level harvest festival
TANJUNG ARU (CS) - After a monthlong catechesis/celebration at parish level, about 1,000 representatives from the various parishes of Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese, including visitors from Singapore, Hong Kong and Philippines, gathered at Stella Maris Church Tanjung Aru May 29 for the culminating Mass and fellowship. The 14th Archdiocesan Harvest Festival Celebration began with children in traditional attire leading the procession with a sumazau dance from the vesting room to the church entrance.
Archbishop John Lee presided over the Mass which was concelebrated with most of the priests of the archdiocese.
However, the homily was given by Fr Fundes Motiung, pastor of Stella Maris, based on the theme Culture begins in the Family.
In his message for the celebration released May 3, the archbishop wrote:
The extent a race is able to preserve its culture will depend very much on the type of education and formation given in the families of that particular race.
For example, if the local dialect is no longer used in the family, in time to come that language will be extinct from that community...For this reason, the family is the source of culture, not only the beginning. Life begins in the family. The foundations of a human person are shaped and he or she is identified through the culture that is being lived."
Main Organising Committee Chairman Msgr Primus Jouil said that the event is held every two years and its theme is a continuation of the previous celebration.
It was launched April 24 at the Archdiocesan Centre Penampang by the archbishop.
Since it was held within the Priestly Year, souvenirs were given to each priest and deacon present after the Mass at the parish hall.
The handing over ceremony was performed through the presentation of paddy seeds by Host Parish Stella Maris to the 2012 Host Parish St Peter Kudat for them to plant and nuture until the next celebration.
